According to Newsweek magazine, the tail section of a Boeing-made C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft fell off during flight and crashed into the parking lot of a Catholic school in Hanahan, South Carolina on the afternoon of September 12.

Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, said the military transport aircraft experienced an in-flight malfunction but landed safely. The crew reported the incident and returned to base after the tail cone fell off during flight. A team recovered the object and there were no injuries or property damage.

An investigation is underway into the incident.

The school's Charleston Diocese confirmed the tail of the plane landed in the parking lot, but fortunately no students were in the area at the time. "The military arrived and removed it. Officers apologized and were concerned for the safety of the school and the community," the diocese said in a statement.

It’s unclear what went wrong with the plane, but it could cause further problems for Boeing, which is facing multiple lawsuits after the fuselage of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX passenger jet fell off mid-flight in January. Several passengers were injured and the entire 737 MAX fleet was grounded. An investigation later found that the fuselage, a restyled side door, had come loose.

The C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft that can carry cargo or troops and perform evacuation missions. The US Air Force considers it the most versatile aircraft in the airlift force, capable of taking off and landing on runways as short as 3,500 feet (1,066 m). The aircraft is 53 m long, has a wingspan of 51.75 m, has a crew of 3, and can carry 102 paratroopers and equipment, or about 77,500 kg of cargo.
