Princess Aiko, the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, plans to start working for the Japanese Red Cross in April after graduating from university, NHK reported.

The Imperial Household Agency said her work at the Red Cross, headquartered in Tokyo, will begin on April 1. Princess Aiko, 23, is currently a fourth-year student at Gakushuin University in Tokyo.

The Red Cross has more than 60,000 employees and operates hospitals, blood transfusion centers and nursing training facilities across the country. Empress Masako is honorary president of the organization.

Princess Aiko has been involved in various welfare activities through her royal duties and university studies. In October 2023, the princess, along with the Emperor and Empress, visited the Red Cross to view an exhibition on relief efforts following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.

Such experiences contributed to her seeking to become involved with the Red Cross, officials said.

Details of her work at the organisation have not been released, but officials said she will work as a contract worker to balance her Red Cross work and royal duties.

Princess Aiko issued a statement through an aide, saying she was happy to be working for the Red Cross. She hopes to continue studying and working hard as a member of society.

The emperor and empress shared that they hope their daughter will grow up through work and do her best to help as many people as possible.
