Reuters first reported the faster-than-expected timeline, despite the FAA announcing in September that it would be extending the review process.
FAA approves license for SpaceX to launch Starship 5 spacecraft.
According to information from SpaceX, they will launch the Starship spacecraft at 7am on Sunday (Monday in Vietnam).
Announced yesterday (October 12), the FAA said SpaceX had "met all safety, environmental, and other procedural requirements for the suborbital test flight" of the fifth test of Starship and had also approved the Starship 6 mission profile.
The Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket are a fully reusable system designed to carry people and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon and beyond.
The fifth test flight of Starship/Super Heavy from Boca Chica, Texas, included a return to the launch site of the Super Heavy booster for a capture attempt by the launch tower and a water landing of the Starship spacecraft in the Indian Ocean west of Australia.
If SpaceX chooses an uncontrolled entry, the FAA said, “it must notify the FAA of that decision prior to launch, and the loss of the Starship spacecraft will be considered a planned event and will not require an incident investigation.”
On Friday, the FAA approved SpaceX to resume Falcon 9 rocket launches, after reviewing and accepting the SpaceX-led investigation and corrective actions for the September 28 incident.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has previously been harshly critical of the FAA, including proposing a $633,000 fine against the space exploration company over launch issues and delays in approving a license for Starship 5, which the company said was ready to launch in August.
Not stopping there, the owner of social network X also called on FAA head Mike Whitaker to resign and threatened to sue the agency.
