An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in Texas (USA) for participating in three attacks, including robbing a Vietnamese woman and throwing her to the ground, leaving her paralyzed.
Fox News on October 14 quoted prosecutor Kim Ogg in Harris County (Texas, USA) saying that defendant Joseph Harrell admitted to robbery causing serious injury.
The robbery on February 13 in Houston left Ms. Truong Nhung (41 years old) paralyzed from the waist down. In the surveillance camera footage, the perpetrator can be seen hugging the victim and throwing her to the ground.
Investigators said the perpetrator followed the victim for nearly 40 kilometers as she walked from the bank to a shopping center and robbed her of $4,300 in cash that she had just withdrawn.
"People should feel safe in our communities and not have to worry about being on guard every time they go to the bank or do something," said Attorney Ogg.
The perpetrator followed the victim from the bank and attacked near the shopping mall.
The defendant must serve at least half of his sentence before he can be paroled. He also cannot appeal, under a deal that spares him from prosecution in two other attacks.
Assistant District Attorney Sean Kozar-King, who prosecuted the case, credited the Houston Police Department's robbery unit for thoroughly investigating the case.
"The victim was going about her daily business and had withdrawn money from the bank to visit her family in Vietnam when she was attacked. Not only did he steal a significant amount of money, but he also left her paralyzed, possibly permanently. It is not yet clear how long she will be in a wheelchair," said Mr. Kozar-King.
