(CLO) Authorities have identified 55 of the 67 people killed in the mid-air collision between an American Airlines plane and a military helicopter over the Potomac River in Washington, DC.

On Monday, the Army Corps of Engineers will begin removing the wreck from the river, a task officials said could take a week or more.

“We have a large landfill,” said Col. Francis Pera of the Army Corps of Engineers. “Within that large landfill, we’re using different techniques to make sure we can understand what’s in the water.”

Earlier on Sunday, relatives of the 67 people killed arrived at the riverbank near the accident site.

Debris is being moved to a hangar at Washington Reagan National Airport. Much of the Potomac River remains open to licensed vessels only. The airport's two little-used runways remain closed.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board said Saturday that they determined the CRJ-700 was at an altitude of 325 feet (99 meters), plus or minus 25 feet, at the time of the crash.

The information is based on data obtained from the jet's flight data recorder - the "black box" that tracks the plane's movement, speed and other parameters.

New details show the US Army helicopter was flying at an altitude of more than 200 feet (61 meters), the maximum altitude for the route it was using.

Data confirms air traffic controllers warned the helicopter of the CRJ-700's presence about two minutes before the crash.

According to the plane's cockpit voice recorder, the crew of the American flight made a "verbal response" seconds before the crash, and flight data showed the plane's nose began to pitch up, officials said.
