Special prosecutor Jack Smith on August 27 announced a new indictment against former US President Donald Trump in the 2020 election interference case.

A spokesman for the US Department of Justice (DOJ) said that a grand jury in Washington DC has issued a new indictment, charging defendant Trump with the same criminal offenses as in the original indictment.
The new indictment shows that the government has tried to respect and implement the Supreme Court's ruling and instructions, the official said.
Previously, in August 2023, former President Trump denied the federal indictment for conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Last July, the Supreme Court ruled that Mr. Trump had immunity from prosecution for the official duties he performed while President, and sent the case back to the lower court to choose which indictment could be retained.
The new indictment retains the same four federal charges against former President Trump as in Mr. Smith’s original indictment, but the charges are reduced to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling.
For example, in the new indictment, Mr. Smith dropped the allegation that Mr. Trump sought to use the DOJ to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The Supreme Court’s ruling determined that the former president’s actions were official.
The new indictment is 36 pages long, compared to 45 pages in the original indictment.
Special prosecutor Smith announced the new indictment just days after he filed a petition with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals asking for a federal judge's ruling to dismiss a case in which Trump illegally possessed classified documents after leaving office.
