AP reported yesterday that the warning of "extremely dangerous situations" in many areas of Los Angeles and Ventura (California) on January 15 issued by the US National Weather Service (NWS) has expired without any further outbreaks of fires and temperatures have cooled.
The improved weather conditions will help firefighters make further progress in their efforts to contain two major fires around Los Angeles. Firefighters have contained about 20 percent of the Palisades Fire and nearly 50 percent of the Eaton Fire.

However, the NWS warned that dangerous weather conditions could return early next week. Residents already weary and worried by the wildfires said they were ready to leave quickly given the threat of strong winds.
Firefighters and police officers also face new challenges. Since the major fires began last week, authorities have arrested six people accused of starting several new small fires. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said one suspect admitted to lighting the tree fire “because she liked the smell of burning leaves,” and another said “she liked to cause chaos and destruction.”
So far, authorities have not determined the cause of the massive fires, while at least 25 people have died and thousands of homes have been destroyed. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced on January 15 that nearly 30 people were still missing. Mr. Luna added that police have checked 5,500 properties for victims of the Eaton Fire and hope to complete the search by January 16 (US time).
