A 4.7-magnitude earthquake shook buildings in New York City and surrounding states, an area that rarely experiences strong seismic activity.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake occurred at 10:20 a.m. on April 5 (9:20 p.m. Hanoi time) with the epicenter located at a depth of nearly 5 km, north of Whitehouse Station in New Jersey.

The tremors were felt in New York City and New Jersey, as well as northern Pennsylvania and western Connecticut. Many buildings shook and residents were taken by surprise in an area that rarely records significant seismic activity.
There are no reports of casualties or damage in the earthquake.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said flights from New York City could be delayed by at least 30-45 minutes. Civil aviation tracking data also shows that some flights to New York City have been diverted.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said they were deploying an emergency response. The White House said US President Joe Biden had been briefed on the incident.
"Everything shook violently for about 30 seconds, like sitting on a drum," said Charita Walcott, a 38-year-old resident of the Bronx borough of New York City.

The United Nations Security Council had to suspend a meeting on the situation in the Gaza Strip due to the earthquake.
The incident reminded some New Yorkers of the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Virginia in 2011, forcing evacuations of buildings in the city. The quake was felt in more than 10 states and caused an estimated $300 million in damage.
