(CLO) German authorities have arrested a Libyan citizen suspected of having ties to the Islamic State extremist group and planning to attack the Israeli Embassy.
In a statement released by the Federal Prosecutor's Office on October 20, police and other security forces arrested the man on the evening of October 19 in the town of Bernau in the state of Brandenburg, just outside the capital Berlin.
An elite police unit equipped with heavy weapons stormed the suspect's home in Bernau to search it, shortly after receiving a tip-off from an unidentified foreign intelligence agency.
The prosecutor's office said the suspect is a Libyan citizen, identified only as Omar A.
"He intended to carry out a high -profile armed attack on the Israeli Embassy in Berlin. As part of his plan, the suspect exchanged information with a member of IS on Messenger," the statement said.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said German security services had "acted promptly to thwart plans to attack the Israeli embassy in Berlin".
The prosecutor's office said the suspect is expected to appear before an investigating judge at the country's highest court, the Federal Court of Justice in the city of Karlsruhe, on October 20.
Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor thanked German security services "for ensuring the security of our embassy".
