EU may have to cover the sun if other measures fail to stop global warming

The EU is studying techniques that involve large-scale interventions on natural phenomena such as blocking radiation from the sun, as part of a new strategy to tackle climate change and prevent global warming from reaching alarming levels.

Bloomberg reported on June 27 that a draft document on the implementation program could be released this week.

The document is said to assess the consequences of rapid global warming, affecting water resources or food scarcity. At the same time, the document also analyzes the risk that this situation could trigger new conflicts or large migrations in the future.

Projects under consideration include deflecting solar radiation or preventing it from reaching the Earth's surface and causing changes to the weather. In other words, the EU is looking into the possibility of shading the sun and cooling the climate.

In addition, the document is expected to address potential solutions as well as risk aspects if applied.

“The EU will support international efforts to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the risks and uncertainties associated with climate interventions, including the regulation of solar radiation,” according to the document, which is still in the drafting stage.

The above option is being considered in the context of the world's concerns that it may not achieve the goal of controlling global temperature increase to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

According to some sources, sun-shading measures can also lead to side effects, such as changes in rainfall patterns in some areas.
