Tomato prices in India have increased sharply this year.

In some areas, the wholesale price of tomatoes, a traditional staple of Indian cuisine , has increased by 288% to 140 rupees ($1.70) per kilogram on July 7. Retail prices are even higher, forcing many to cut back on consumption of the fruit. In New Delhi, tomatoes cost more than petrol (96 rupees per liter).

Due to the sharp rise in tomato prices, fast food chain McDonald's restaurants have decided to remove tomatoes from their burgers and wraps menus in India.

Tomato prices will fall in August when the harvest begins, and will rise again in October and November when production is slow, said Rohit Kumar Singh, director general of consumer affairs at the Ministry of Food.
