Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for May 2025 delivery rose 18 yuan to 3,246 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures fell for a fourth straight session, hitting their lowest in more than 14 months, as persistently weak property data in top consumer China added to pessimism about the demand outlook.

The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 2.09 percent to 703.5 yuan ($98.32) a tonne.

The contract hit its lowest since May 26, 2023 at 691 yuan/tonne in early trading.

Benchmark iron ore for September delivery on the Singapore Exchange fell 2.81% to $93.50 a tonne, its lowest since November 2022.

China's real estate investment fell 10.2% in the first seven months of the year from a year earlier, after falling 10.1% in January-June. New construction starts measured by floor area fell 23.2% year-on-year in the first seven months, after falling 23.7% in the first half, official data showed.

The real estate market remains China's largest steel consumer, although its share has declined amid the prolonged crisis since 2021.

“We believe there is still room for further downside in terms of valuations as prices have broken the key support level of $100/mt,” analysts at Shengda Futures said in a note.

Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange continued to fall, with sharp price drops dampening sentiment, analysts said. Rebar fell 0.16 percent, hot-rolled coil fell 1.71 percent, steel bars fell 0.83 percent and stainless steel was flat.

China's crude steel output fell for a second month in July, down 9.5% from June, as many steelmakers carried out maintenance amid widening of already negative profit margins.

That brought total output in the first seven months to 613.72 million tonnes, down 2.2% from the same period last year.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE recovered somewhat after a sharp decline on Wednesday, with coking coal and coke up 3.52% and 1.18% respectively.
