Dog Connie rescued from container

NBC reported on February 5 that a lucky dog was rescued by US Coast Guard (USCG) personnel after being trapped in a container at a port in Texas.

The dog, later named Connie, became trapped in a container destined for overseas shipping and had been inside for at least eight days before being discovered on January 31.

Connie was rescued by USCG marine science technicians Bryan Wainscott, Lucas Loe, Ryan McMahon and Jose Reyes. They were randomly checking containers when they heard barking and scratching coming from inside one of the containers, according to a release from the USCG Heartland (Texas) Region.

The container was stacked more than 23 feet high and had to be lowered by a crane. "When they lowered the container and opened the door, a dog jumped out," according to USCG Heartland. The officers said the dog was tired, hungry and very happy to see the rescuers.

Photos posted on the USCG Heartland Facebook page show Connie wagging her tail, sniffing around and drinking water after her escape. Coast Guard officials said Connie had been trapped for at least eight days without water or food and was emaciated and dirty when she was rescued.

Authorities have not yet determined where the container came from, but it was filled with used cars that were likely on their way overseas to be sold for parts. Based on this information, Officer Corrine Zilnicki of USCG Heartland said it was likely in a car at a used car lot when it accidentally ended up in the container.

Connie was taken to the Pasadena Animal Shelter for care, before being taken to Forever Changed Animal Rescue (FCAR). They plan to find her “the wonderful home she deserves.” FCAR’s Facebook post was filled with comments from people wanting to adopt Connie.
