Grab is aiming to protect the environment
Grab has announced a two-phase roadmap to reduce plastic waste. In the first phase, Grab will focus on reducing unnecessary food packaging and replacing single-use plastic with biodegradable plastic. Grab will also continue to develop reverse logistics services to promote the use of recyclable and reusable packaging.
These efforts began in 2019, when Grab introduced a new feature in the app, encouraging users to choose "no plastic utensils" for GrabFood orders. To date, Grab has reduced 23,800 tons of plastic waste. Of this, in 2022 alone, there were 898 million plastic utensils, equivalent to about 8,088 tons of plastic waste, reducing emissions into the environment. Phase one will last until 2030, with the goal of reducing 30% of plastic waste in Grab's ecosystem.
Phase two will focus on developing long-term, scalable solutions to contribute to a circular economy , including organising waste collection and promoting the use of reusable packaging. These efforts will help Grab reduce plastic packaging waste to zero by 2040.
