US House passes bill to prevent last-minute government shutdown

(Dan Tri) - The US House of Representatives has passed a budget bill, preventing a government shutdown just hours before the deadline. The bill does not meet President-elect Donald Trump's demands regarding the debt ceiling.

Reuters reported that on the evening of December 20, the US House of Representatives passed a new budget spending bill with 366 votes in favor and 34 votes against.

The bill would extend funding for the US government through March 14, provide $100 billion for disaster-hit states and $10 billion for farmers.

However, the bill does not include a provision related to the debt ceiling that President-elect Donald Trump previously asked Republicans to address.

The bill will now move to the Senate for approval. If Congress fails to pass the bill, the federal government will not have funding for operations after December 21. However, the new bill is expected to easily pass the Senate.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Republicans will have more power to influence government spending next year, when they will have majorities in both the House and Senate and with Trump in the White House. He added that President-elect Trump has agreed to the recently passed budget bill.

The disagreement over the budget bill between Republicans and Democrats earlier this week put the US government on the brink of a shutdown. The new bill partly shows the Republicans' concessions.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said the new bill meets important goals such as providing disaster aid, preventing a government shutdown and preventing Republicans from raising the debt ceiling to make tax cuts easier.

“We have succeeded in protecting the everyday needs of Americans, but there is still much work to do in the year ahead,” he said.
