Diplomats from South Korea, China and Japan held high-level talks in the South Korean capital Seoul, discussing trilateral cooperation and exploring the possibility of resuming a long-stalled summit between the three countries' leaders.
The trilateral summit between the Northeast Asian neighbors was first held in December 2008; it has been stalled since 2019 due to the dispute that broke out between South Korea and Japan over a South Korean court ruling on Japan's compensation for wartime forced labor and the subsequent outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Discussions about the need to restore trilateral high-level diplomacy have emerged after relations between Seoul and Tokyo thawed with President Yoon Suk-yeol taking charge of South Korea last May.
As the current chair of the trilateral cooperation mechanism, South Korea is working to host a South Korea-China-Japan summit this year.
