Hundreds of millions of dollars to support students with AI and cloud computing skills

DNVN - AWS commits to invest 100 million USD to help disadvantaged students equip themselves with literacy, cloud computing and AI skills.

In today’s ever-evolving digital age, being equipped with skills in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), cloud computing, and computer science will open up countless new opportunities for students. However, not everyone can easily equip themselves with these essential skills for their future careers.

Understanding this, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has just made a commitment to level the playing field in education , ensuring that students from disadvantaged and marginalized communities can also access life-changing learning opportunities. Therefore, AWS will provide up to $ 100 million in cloud credits over the next 5 years for educational institutions around the world to build or expand their digital learning solutions. This is part of the newly announced Amazon Web Services Education Equaty Initiative.

The AWS Education Equity Initiative builds on Amazon and AWS's long-standing commitment to providing educational and career opportunities to underserved students.

The new program will provide participating organizations with cloud computing credits to use AWS cloud services, giving them access to a comprehensive portfolio of cloud services and advanced AI services to develop innovations such as AI assistants, coding curricula, connectivity tools, digital learning platforms, mobile apps, chatbots, and other digital learning experiences.

Additionally, organizations will receive dedicated technical support from the AWS Solutions Architect team, which will provide comprehensive architectural guidance and best practices to help organizations deploy AI responsibly, as well as ongoing support for optimizing the solution to ensure optimal performance.

AWS is working with more than 50 organizations across 10 countries, helping them apply cutting-edge technologies to deliver digital learning solutions to serve underserved and marginalized communities. Examples include:

Code.org, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing computer science and AI education to K-12 schools in the U.S., with a focus on young women and students from underrepresented groups, will use AWS credits to expand its AI Teaching Assistant, which has helped many teachers reduce the time they spend assessing student coding projects by up to 50%.

Rocket Learning, an India-based nonprofit focused on improving access to quality early childhood education for underprivileged children, will expand its use of Amazon Q in AWS QuickSight, a business data analytics tool, to track trends and evaluate the effectiveness of video content and WhatsApp messages delivered daily to teachers and parents.

Tangible Africa, a nonprofit that teaches coding skills to children in South Africa, is expanding its offline coding curriculum on AWS, aiming to reach 10,000 students and 120 teachers in Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia.

The AWS Education Equity Initiative builds on Amazon and AWS’s longstanding commitment to providing educational and career opportunities to underserved students. Over the past year, more than 2 million students have taken 17 million hours of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, literacy skills, and career development delivered through programs such as Amazon Future Engineer, a program dedicated to helping underserved and marginalized students access computer science education, and other Amazon education programs. Additionally, the AWS AI and ML Scholarship Program has awarded $28 million in scholarships to approximately 6,000 students, helping them prepare for future careers in artificial intelligence.
