About 60,000 Ukrainian military personnel have been trained in European Union (EU) countries since February 2022, the Euractiv news portal reported, citing Kiev officials, on August 23. According to the European news portal, EU military aid to Ukraine has exceeded 39 billion euros.
Speaking to Euractiv on August 23, a day before Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations (August 24), as the conflict with Russia approaches its third year, Chentsov said Kiev hopes to expand cooperation with the EU after the bloc’s new leadership takes office.
According to Mr. Chentsov, the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission (EC) and Roberta Metsola as President of the European Parliament (EP) is a good thing because both leaders have always prioritized support for Ukraine. In addition to military and humanitarian assistance, Kiev hopes that EU accession negotiations will continue to progress, the Ukrainian Ambassador added.
Regarding the aid issue, Mr. Chentsov said his country expects "continuous military support, including the provision of defense systems, ammunition, artillery, aircraft and training for our armed forces."

Since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, EU military aid to Kiev has exceeded 39 billion euros, while nearly 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been trained through the EU Military Assistance Mission to Support Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine), according to official Kiev estimates.
“We hope that the newly established Ukraine Support Fund under the European Peace Facility will be the core pillar of this support,” Chentsov said.
However, Hungary has been blocking reimbursements under EU funds used to buy weapons for Ukraine for more than a year now. Asked about Hungary's growing willingness to block EU decisions regarding Ukraine, Kiev's ambassador to Brussels stressed that Ukraine is "doing its utmost to ensure constructive dialogue with Budapest."
For that, as part of its EU accession talks, Ukraine is “taking all legitimate concerns seriously and hopes to make significant progress by the end of the year”.
EUMAM Ukraine is set to be deployed in October 2022. Under the program, Ukrainian military personnel are regularly trained according to the standards of the armed forces of EU countries, with the main training bases located in Germany and Poland.
At the end of November last year, the EU allocated nearly 200 million euros for training the Ukrainian army. In March this year, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Western bloc had become a party to the conflict in Ukraine.
