Hezbollah moves closer to ceasefire deal

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên26/11/2024

The Israeli government last night (November 26) discussed approving a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah proposed by the US to end the 14-month conflict that has killed thousands of people.

If approved by Israel, US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron will jointly announce the agreement, according to Reuters.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the parties were getting closer to an agreement but nothing would be certain until it was finalized. Similarly, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Washington was working hard to reach a ceasefire in Lebanon but noted that no final decision had been made.

Under the 60-day ceasefire plan, Israel will withdraw from southern Lebanon and the Beirut army will move troops to the border while Hezbollah withdraws its forces north of the Litani River. Since the conflict began, Hezbollah has suffered heavy losses, losing a number of commanders to Israeli airstrikes. However, the group has continued to launch rockets across the border.

The ceasefire will allow 60,000 Israelis to return to northern Israel. Israeli officials have stressed that Tel Aviv can still attack imminent threats during the ceasefire if Lebanon fails to intervene. According to The Times of Israel , some officials leading northern Israeli communities expressed opposition yesterday, saying that the safety of residents is not guaranteed and that the agreement does not include a buffer zone monitored by the Israeli military.
