Coach Troussier parted ways with the Vietnam national team in March 2024. It was not until yesterday that he sat on the coaching bench for the first time when he led the Japanese Legends team in a friendly match against the Monaco Former Players team.

Coach Troussier was the teacher of many bright stars of Japanese football such as Keisuke Honda, Daisuke Matsui, Yuji Nakazawa, Hiroshi Nanami, Akira Kaji, Yoichiro Kakitani.

On the other side of the battle line, the Monaco Former Players team includes many famous former players such as Marcel Desailly, Clarence Seedorf, Patrice Evra, Robert Pires, Ludovic Giuly, Eric Abidal.

Despite being away from the field for quite a while, the players of both teams still showed many good technical qualities. In particular, the former Monaco team, with many stars who once dominated world football, played quite well.

The match was intense. In the end, the Monaco team won 4-3 against the Japanese Legends team.

Despite the loss, Coach Troussier was not upset. The most important thing was that he was able to return to Japan, the land that made his name, and meet many of his former students.

“I am very grateful to be back in Japan. Although it has been 25 years since I coached the Japanese national team, everything feels like yesterday. I am very happy to see many of the players I coached and to be able to lead the Japanese Legends team,” said the French coach.

Coach Troussier was not successful with Vietnamese football. However, in Japan, he is a respected figure. The French coach led the Japanese national team from 1998 to 2002. He helped the "Samurai Blue" win the 2000 Asian Cup and reach the 1/8 round of the 2002 World Cup. He was one of the people who laid the foundation for the rise of Japanese football when he discovered many talented young players.

In 2020, the Japan Football Association decided to honor Coach Troussier in the Japan Football Hall of Fame.
