HMD Global partners to build anti-addiction smartphone solution for children

VTC NewsVTC News03/11/2024

HMD Global’s goal is to create smartphones that can be made non-addictive. This stems from a recent study by HMD and Perspectus Global that found that more than 10,000 parents from five countries (UK, US, India, Germany and Australia) expressed their concerns.

Research results show that 60% of parents worry about their children using smartphones too much, 50% regret giving their children smartphones when they were young, and 70% say that a childhood without smartphones helped them interact more with their family.

The Better Phone Project” by HMD Global

To address these issues, earlier this year HMD partnered with Xplora – a Norwegian company that specializes in smartwatches for kids – to develop a suite of solutions including a child-friendly feature phone and a smartwatch that encourages mindful use of technology.

Xplora will design the devices, while HMD will handle distribution, with the aim of providing smartphone alternatives that reduce distraction and prioritize child safety.

The “anti-addiction” devices are expected to launch in March 2025 at MWC, with features such as parental controls, smart home connectivity and eSIM functionality. These devices are designed to promote healthy digital habits and help parents effectively manage screen time and social media.

HMD CEO Jean-Francois Baril said he was excited to create technology that puts “human” values at its core, while Xplora CEO Sten Kirkbak said the partnership would help Xplora expand into the youth tech market and support the digital wellbeing of young users.

The goal of this collaboration is to develop technology tools that encourage a balanced relationship with technology, providing a safe and distraction-free experience for young users.
