Speaking at a press conference on May 12, the head of the State Fire Service, Mariusz Feltynowski, said that nearly 200 firefighters from 50 firefighting teams, including chemical and environmental rescue specialists, more than 50 pieces of equipment and even robots were deployed to extinguish the fire.

Footage broadcast by private television station TVN24 showed thick black smoke billowing across the area and more than 80% of the centre in flames.

Authorities sent text messages warning Warsaw residents about the fire and advised them to stay indoors and close their windows for safety.

The fire did not cause any casualties as shopping malls and large stores in Poland are usually closed on Sundays. However, the economic loss after the fire is said to be not small.

According to Crisis24, disruption to transportation and businesses is certain in the affected area in the coming hours. Officials may close roads or issue additional evacuation orders at short notice to facilitate emergency response and ensure public safety. The fires could also significantly worsen air quality in the surrounding area.
