The “small fire” was “quickly extinguished” after it broke out on June 25, a spokesperson for the cruise line operator Royal Caribbean confirmed. The cruise line said there were no injuries and the overall impact on the ship was “minimal.”

The Icon of the Seas, which is nearly 1,200 feet long and weighs 250,800 tons, was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico, when the incident occurred. The ship briefly lost power, but backup power was activated immediately.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed that crew members were able to control the fire as they were all trained to handle such situations.

Passengers were alerted to what was happening during the incident, according to the cruise line. Social media users on the Icon of the Seas Facebook group spoke of minor disruptions to their day, but operations quickly returned to normal.

The $2 billion “icon of the sea” made headlines when it launched earlier this year, boasting seven swimming pools – including a record-breaking 1,600-square-foot water park. The ship’s current itinerary has not been affected by the fire, and the ship is currently en route to the Mexican island of Cozumel.

Earlier in March, a fire broke out on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship. Footage of the burning stern was captured by a passenger.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said small fires are "not common but not rare" on cruise ships, but are usually dealt with quickly and cause little disruption to passengers.
