Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên05/11/2024

The US presidential election takes place today, November 5, to find a successor to Mr. Joe Biden to lead the country for the next 4 years.
All eyes are on the United States, where voters head to the polls today on Election Day. The once-in-four-years event attracts the attention of not only Americans but also most outside the country as the race for the White House will shape the country for the next four years. Will it be an America led for the first time by a woman - Democratic Party's Kamala Harris - or a noisy return of Donald Trump - the 45th president of the country.

About 160 million people are registered to vote, and more than 77 million of them have voted early by mail or in person at polling stations across the United States before November 5. According to NBC News, of the more than 77 million voters who have voted early, 41% are registered as Democrats, 39% are registered as Republicans, and the rest are unknown. According to US media, the three towns of Dixville Notch, Hart's Location and Millsfield in New Hampshire are the first places to open for voters to vote from 0:00 on November 5 (ie 12:00 noon on November 5 Vietnam time). Most other polling stations open from 6:00 a.m. Voters cast ballots but do not directly elect the president. The United States does not decide the winner by popular vote, the candidate who wins more votes does not necessarily become president. The president is elected when at least 270 of the 538 electors vote for him or her. This means that when voters go to the polls, they are essentially choosing a slate of electors that are tied to the candidate who won the popular vote in each state. The number of electors corresponds to the number of seats each state has in the bicameral Congress .
After the polls closed, several major US media outlets projected the results. The Electoral College will vote on December 17 and the official results will be announced by Congress on January 6, 2025. In practice, the candidates' races are largely decided in the battleground states, as many states have traditionally supported one of the two major parties, the Democrats and the Republicans. This year, the seven battleground states that the two candidates are particularly interested in are Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina and Georgia. This year's race is considered to be tight and unpredictable, as no candidate has a clear majority of support nationally or in the battleground states.
