ILO rejects petition of trainee doctors in Korea

The International Labor Organization (ILO) has rejected a petition by South Korean trainee doctors to intervene, as the government plans to suspend the licenses of striking doctors who fail to return to work by a government- set deadline.

The ILO judged that the Korean Intern Trainee Association (KIRA) was not eligible to file such an intervention complaint because it was not a union or representative labor group, Chunso Daily quoted a notice from the Korean Ministry of Labor as saying.

KIRA had earlier requested urgent intervention from the ILO on March 13, alleging that the government had forced them into forced labor by issuing orders to return to work; and abused its power by suspending their licenses. At a meeting on March 22, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said the government would supplement medical personnel by hiring retired senior doctors and deploying military doctors.
