Thales and Indonesian defense company PT Len Industri said today, June 18, that the Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400a) radars that Indonesia ordered will allow the country's military to "benefit from an integrated aerial image capable of detecting all types of threats, from aircraft and missiles to helicopters and drones," according to AFP.

This photo taken on June 15, 2023 shows a Trac NG radar at a Thales site in the commune of Ymare, northwestern France.

The GM400a is a mobile radar with a range of 515 kilometres and "integrated artificial intelligence capabilities to manage the huge amount of data" it receives, Pascale Sourisse, a senior executive at Thales, told AFP.

Ms. Sourisse also said that the purchase of 13 latest-generation radars "shows Indonesia's interest in monitoring its surrounding airspace, which is directly related to the situation in the Indo- Pacific ." The amount of the contract was not disclosed. Each radar is known to cost tens of millions of dollars, according to AFP.

The contract stipulates that Thales will build the radars and computer systems to process the information received by the radars, while PT Len is responsible for building the stations to install the radars.

Rising geopolitical tensions have led to strong growth in the radar market, and Ms Sourisse said this is why Thales has transformed its industrial organisation and developed its manufacturing capacity in other countries as well as in France.

More than 80 GM400 and GM400a radars have been sold to 19 countries, according to AFP citing figures from Thales.
