Indonesia sets record for world's largest 'sekubal' cake

'Sekubal' is a traditional dish typical of Lampung region; made from main ingredients of glutinous rice and coconut milk, then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed.

On July 27, the government of Bandarlampung city, the capital of Lampung province of Indonesia, was awarded a record certificate by the Indonesian Museum of World Records (MURI) for the world's largest 'sekubal' cake.

According to a VNA reporter in Indonesia, the event took place within the framework of the "Lampung Traditional Food and Street Snacks Festival" held in Bandarlampung city.

The record certificate was presented directly to the Mayor of Bandarlampung, Ms. Eva Dwiana, by MURI CEO, Mr. Yusuf Ngadri.

The record-breaking 'sekubal' cake measures 25 metres in length and 25 centimetres in diameter. It is the result of joint efforts by the government, relevant stakeholders and a large number of local people, including micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

Speaking after receiving the award, Mayor Eva Dwiana emphasized: "This is a meaningful gift for the people and city of Bandarlampung."

Ms. Eva Dwiana said that this award is not only a source of pride, but also a testament to the hard work and solidarity of the community.

The event of making a giant 'sekubal' cake was held to celebrate the 343rd anniversary of the founding of Bandarlampung city.

This activity is not only to set a record but also has a deeper meaning, symbolizing the spirit of cooperation “gotong royong” (mutual assistance) and efforts to preserve indigenous cultural values.

Mayor Eva Dwiana expressed hope that promoting traditional cultural values and record-breaking events like this will contribute to boosting the local economy , while promoting the image of Bandarlampung city to the world.

"Hopefully this event will bring many blessings. I hope to receive support and wish all the city's programs go well," said Eva Dwiana.

The event attracted representatives of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) of Bandarlampung City, food festival participants and thousands of people to witness and cheer.

'Sekubal' is a traditional dish typical of Lampung region. It is made from glutinous rice and coconut milk, then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed.

'Sekubal' has a chewy texture, rich taste and is often considered a special dish, indispensable during major holidays, especially the Muslim Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran).

This cake can be served with savory dishes such as curry, rendang (beef stew) or eaten as a dessert with tape ketan (fermented sticky rice)./.
