The “Super Sturgeon Moon” will be at its fullest on August 1. This is the second supermoon of the year (after last month’s Buck Moon), and it will be almost as big as the biggest supermoon of 2023. The next full moon will be on August 30.
The August full moon is often named after the prolific North American sturgeon fish found in the Great Lakes at this time of year.
The Anishinaabeg people called it Minoomini Giizis and Cereal Moon (wild rice), according to the Center for Native American Studies.
After the Sturgeon Moon, the next full moon will be a Blue Moon on August 30. The biggest and brightest supermoon of 2023, the Blue Moon will be 220,000 miles (357,344 kilometers) from Earth, 20 miles (33 kilometers) closer than the Sturgeon Moon.
Full moons are always visible to the naked eye (weather permitting), but those looking to get a more detailed look at the supermoon should consider investing in a pair of stargazing binoculars or a good small telescope to improve their sky-gazing experience.
