Iran's IRNA news agency reported on February 17 that the country has unveiled new weapons, including the domestically produced Arman anti-ballistic missile system and Azarakhsh low-altitude air defense system.

The launching ceremony of the two weapons systems took place in the presence of Iranian Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani.

According to IRNA : “With the introduction of new systems into the country's defense network, the air defense capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran will increase significantly.

The Arman missile system can simultaneously engage six targets at a distance of 120 to 180 km, while the Azarakhsh missile system can identify and destroy targets at a distance of up to 50 km.”

The move comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with Iran-backed Houthi forces carrying out a series of attacks on US, British and Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea in a show of solidarity with the people of the Gaza Strip.

In response to Houthi attacks, the US has targeted sites inside Yemen as well as facilities of Iran-backed militia groups in Iraq and Syria.

The Yemeni group’s continued attacks prompted U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to launch a multinational operation last December to protect shipping in the Red Sea. In addition, U.S. and British forces have conducted significant strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, aimed at reducing the group’s ability to attack commercial shipping.
