(CLO) About 135 people were killed in a stampede at a football stadium in southeastern Guinea on Sunday, according to a group of local human rights organizations.

A controversial refereeing decision sparked crowd violence and police fired tear gas during the match in the town of Nzerekore, leading to a deadly brawl as spectators tried to flee.

A human rights group in the Nzerekore area said on Tuesday that its higher estimate was based on information from hospitals, cemeteries, witnesses at the stadium, victims' families, mosques, Christian churches and local newspapers.

"We now estimate that 135 people died at the stadium, mostly children under the age of 18," the statement said, adding that more than 50 people were still missing.

The organisation also said that convoys of cars fleeing the stadium even crashed into spectators as they tried to flee what was described as an overcrowded venue and the entrance was blocked by security forces.

The report said the tournament organizers as well as the Guinean government were responsible because they provided technical and financial support for the event, which honored military leader Mamady Doumbouya.
