Jeff Bezos surpasses Elon Musk to regain world's richest title

VnExpressVnExpress05/03/2024

After 3 years, the founder of Amazon is again at the top of the global billionaire rankings, with assets of 200 billion USD.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Jeff Bezos is currently worth $200 billion, $2 billion more than Elon Musk. This is the first time Bezos has returned to the richest position on the planet since 2021. The gap between Musk and Bezos' assets was at one point as high as $142 billion, then gradually narrowed.

Tesla shares closed down more than 7% on March 4, wiping out $17.6 billion in Musk’s fortune in just one day. He has lost more than $31 billion since the start of the year, with Tesla shares down 24%.

Bezos’ fortune also fell on March 4, but only by $500 million. Overall, the Amazon founder has added $23.4 billion since the beginning of the year. Amazon shares have doubled since the end of 2022 and are on track to hit a new all-time high.

The world's richest person has been constantly changing hands over the past year. In May 2023, Musk surpassed LVMH boss Bernard Arnault to take this position. Arnault was previously the richest person on the planet thanks to the luxury goods boom that exploded during the pandemic, driving up LVMH shares.

Musk’s position was further threatened earlier this year when a Delaware court ruled against Tesla’s massive payout package, worth more than $50 billion.

The world’s richest people are constantly changing, depending on the market. Musk and Arnault have both seen their fortunes increase significantly since 2020. A report earlier this year by the non- governmental organization Oxfam found that the wealth of the five richest people on the planet increased by 114% in the past four years, to $869 billion.
