Specifically, Republican lawmakers said the US Department of Justice had treated Hunter Biden - the son of current President Joe Biden - more leniently after agreeing to plead guilty to two misdemeanors for failing to pay income taxes for 2017 and 2018.

The legal incident has been compared to former President Donald Trump's recent indictment on 37 counts related to his handling of classified documents.

Republicans say Hunter Biden's plea deal reflects a double standard of justice that favors Democrats.

Speaking at a press conference in Sweden on June 21, US Attorney General Merrick Garland completely denied the above accusations and stated that he would hand this issue over to US prosecutors to resolve.

“As I said from the moment I was appointed attorney general, I would turn this matter over to the United States attorney, who was appointed by the previous president and assigned to this matter by the previous administration, and that he would be empowered, he would have the discretion to decide the matter as he decided it was appropriate, and that is what he did,” Mr. Garland asserted.

Republicans have been divided over Hunter Biden’s plea deal, with some raising alarms about what they describe as a two-tiered justice system, while others have avoided commenting on the issue or declined to attack the Justice Department .

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy even responded: “This case continues to demonstrate the two-tier system in America. If you are the President’s top political opponent, the Justice Department will literally try to put you in jail and give you jail time. But if you are the President’s son, you get a great deal.”
