"Easy" in the high school graduation exam in literature

Although they were "very nervous" before taking the high school graduation exam in literature, most of the candidates felt "at ease" because the first topic according to the 2018 General Education Program (new program) was related to reality, with the main theme being love for the homeland. The candidates said that the reading comprehension and argumentation sections were related to each other, so they could easily make connections and cite evidence.

Tran Viet Huy and Bui Le Tri Long, students of Tran Khai Nguyen High School (HCMC), said that the reading comprehension part was not difficult and they did not get stuck in this part. Meanwhile, the social discussion part created conditions for students to develop many ideas and cite real-life evidence, while the literary discussion part, although taken from a text, could be linked to previously available data.

Huynh Ngoc My Tram, a student at Chu Van An Continuing Education Center (HCMC), also shared that the reading comprehension part was not difficult for her, while the social commentary and literary commentary parts were still manageable even without much evidence. Overall, Tram assessed that this year's essay was "not difficult" for her.

Through a survey of candidates after the high school graduation exam, most of them commented that this year's literature exam had a "quite easy" reading comprehension section, suitable for average to good abilities. However, the scores among candidates will be clearly differentiated in the remaining two sections: social commentary and literary commentary. These are two sections that require strong argumentation, good critical thinking, and rich social and literary knowledge.

Many students said that this year’s essay questions were “not too challenging” but still required candidates to have a deep understanding and be able to relate to reality. Therefore, although reading comprehension is the “point-saving” part, the two essays are the real “measure” of ability and the deciding factor in whether the exam score is high or low.

Still "safe" even without literature review

After the literature exam, most candidates breathed a sigh of relief and felt “lightened” because the exam was not too difficult and close to reality. Even those who did not focus much on reviewing literature because they were not admitted to the group that included this subject said they had completed the exam “safely”. Many candidates also happily said that this year’s exam created a pleasant mentality, helping them feel more comfortable.

"I didn't have any trouble with the reading comprehension section. I found the social essay section to be quite good, not too difficult, if you review many different types of questions, you will be able to do it. The literature essay section is quite similar to the previous review questions and the parts in the test are all on the same topic, so when I take the test, they are also connected to each other," said Nguyen Kim Chau, a student at Tran Khai Nguyen High School (HCMC). According to Chau, she did not choose literature for admission because she wanted to go to the University of Natural Sciences in HCMC.

Ha Thi Hien, a student at Thang Long High School (HCMC), confided that she chose math, physics, and chemistry as the university entrance exam combination, but she also felt more comfortable after taking the literature exam this year. According to Hien, this year's literature exam was good, related to the country, and the Fatherland is also a hot topic at the moment, so she could easily complete the exam even though she did not choose literature in the admission combination.

According to Lam Ngoc Thuy Linh, a student at Tran Khai Nguyen High School (HCMC), she did not use literature in the admission combination, but because the exam questions were related to reality, she was still able to complete the literature test. In the argumentative writing section, which is worth 4 points, she related the current issue of merging provinces and cities because she felt it was quite suitable for the requirements of the question.

This afternoon, June 26, candidates nationwide continue to take the high school graduation exam in mathematics. The exam starts at 2:30 p.m. and candidates will take the exam in 90 minutes. Tomorrow, June 27, candidates will take the optional exam (with the new program) and the natural science and social science exam (with the old program). By the afternoon of June 27, only candidates with the old program will continue to take the foreign language exam.
