On the evening of July 30, Leon Marchand competed in the semi-finals of the 200m medley. This is one of the four events that helped him win a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Although it was not the final, Leon Marchand had already shown his dominance. In his swim, he finished with a time of 1 minute 52.69 seconds, setting a new world record. This achievement even surpassed the old record of American swimmer Ryan Lochte by 1.31 seconds (1 minute 54 seconds), set at the 2011 World Swimming Championships.
With this overwhelming performance, the 200m medley gold medal is almost in Leon Marchand's hands when he competes in the final tomorrow (July 31).
Sharing after breaking the world record, the athlete born in 2002 said: "I really can't believe this. I was confident that I would surpass my personal best because all the preparation was very good. But breaking the world record is really unimaginable. Being faster than Ryan Lochte by more than 1 second is really crazy. I feel very happy at the moment."
Last year, Leon Marchand rose to stardom in the swimming world with four gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. But then, this swimmer chose to skip some events to focus on key events and at the same time treat injuries.
At this year's World Swimming Championships in Singapore, Leon Marchand only competed in two individual events: the 200m medley and the 400m medley, events in which he also holds the world record.
