Doctor performs cervical disc herniation surgery for LVD patient

Previously, patient LVD (39 years old, residing in Hoa Binh District, Bac Lieu) was hospitalized with severe pain and numbness in the neck area spreading to both arms, accompanied by unsteady walking. Mr. D. had been sick for more than 2 months, received treatment and took medicine for a while but it did not improve. Recently, the patient had pain in the cervical spine spreading to both arms, the pain gradually increased, affecting work and personal life.

Doctor Ngo Quang Dien, Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital, said that through examination and paraclinical tests, the patient had a herniated disc in the cervical spine C5-C6, compressing the spinal cord. After consultation, the team of orthopedic trauma doctors coordinated with anesthesia and resuscitation surgery to perform surgery to remove the nucleus pulposus, graft, and fuse the anterior interbody bone for the patient. After surgery, the patient's pain and numbness in both arms were greatly reduced, and he could eat, sit, and walk. The doctor continued to develop a rehabilitation plan for the patient using physical therapy.

Dr. Dien added that cervical disc herniation is one of the most common diseases, second only to lumbar disc herniation. When a patient has cervical disc herniation, they will often experience pain, fatigue, and aching in the neck, shoulders, and nape of the neck that spreads down to the arms. If left untreated, it can cause more dangerous complications such as muscle weakness and paralysis.
