A new report from TF International Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo says that users may soon see the emergence of cheaper Copilot+ PC systems in the near future thanks to the appearance of a new Snapdragon chip model.

Kuo said the new Snapdragon chip will be a low-cost version of the Snapdragon X series, targeting “mainstream” devices priced between $599 and $799. The chip is internally codenamed “Canim” and is expected to be manufactured by TSMC using a 4nm process. Copilot+ PC laptops equipped with the new chip are likely to hit the market in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Canim is said to offer 40 TOPS of AI power, slightly less than the 45 TOPS offered by the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus. If the report is accurate, that means devices powered by the new chip will meet Microsoft's Copilot+ standard , which requires laptops to have an NPU powerful enough to handle more than 40,000 trillion operations per second (TOPS).

Kuo didn’t reveal any additional details about the Canim, including core configurations, CPU specs, clock speeds, connectivity features, or I/O options. However, since it’s cheaper than flagship chips, it will be interesting to see what features Qualcomm cuts to differentiate its low-cost lineup from its flagship.

Those looking to get their hands on a Copilot+ PC early can now find systems from Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Samsung, and Lenovo that will start shipping this week. Microsoft is also offering two new Copilot+ PC models, the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro. All of these devices come with either the Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus chips and start at $999.

Also in his report, Mr. Kuo provided bad news for Android fans when the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor will be significantly more expensive than its predecessor, with an increase of about 25 - 30%. This will cost device manufacturers about $ 190 - 200 and most likely users will be the victims of this price increase when smartphone prices also increase.
