Completely remove cancerous tumors with robotic arm

VnExpressVnExpress05/01/2024

Hanoi: A 71-year-old female patient with stomach cancer underwent robotic surgery, completely removing the cancerous tissue, and was discharged from the hospital two days after surgery.

The patient is from Nam Dinh and has had frequent epigastric pain for the past two years. Recently, she has experienced increased pain, vomiting blood, and passing black stools. The diagnosis was early stage stomach cancer, which can be completely surgically removed with a robotic arm. The surgery was successful, and the patient is now stable and has been discharged after two days of treatment.

Also discovered a 2cm rectal tumor after a routine health check-up, the 51-year-old man was indicated for radical surgery. Doctors performed robotic surgery to remove the patient's rectum, with no post-operative complications.

These are 2 of 6 gastrointestinal cancer patients who were successfully operated on by doctors at K Hospital and Professor Rasa Zarnegar, Director of the Robotic Surgery Center, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York (USA), using a robotic arm.

"Applying new techniques to cancer treatment, especially in surgical treatment, has brought significant progress to patients in the recovery process, improving their quality of life," said Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh, Deputy Director of K Hospital.

Among them, robotic surgery for digestive cancer treatment has many advantages over conventional open or endoscopic surgery. That is, clear observation images, highly flexible robotic arms help perform meticulous dissections, and surgeons operate precisely. This method ensures aesthetics, minimal trauma, no bleeding, maximum pain reduction, and reduced hospital stay while still ensuring treatment results.

Currently, robotic laparoscopic surgery is applied in some countries such as the US, UK, Korea... The da Vinci Xi robot is the most advanced robot generation today and is the only system in Vietnam used at K Hospital. Digestive cancer surgeries, especially colorectal cancer, using this technology have been performed. In addition, cases of head and neck, gynecological and urological diseases are also applied with the above method.
