On Friday (20 June), European Leagues President Claudius Schafer, Vice President Mathieu Moreuil and Secretary General Alberto Colombo met with Glenn Micallef, European Commissioner for Youth, Culture and Sport , to share their views on the pressing challenges facing football. There, they also submitted a joint complaint (with FIFPRO) against FIFA to the European Commission.
The complaint stems from FIFA's unilateral decisions in arranging international competitions, including the FIFA Club World Cup currently taking place in the United States. As is known, in order to increase its influence at the club level, compete with the UEFA Champions League and gain economic benefits, FIFA decided to expand the FIFA Club World Cup to 32 teams, then organize it in the summer similar to the World Cup.
The world 's most powerful football body did not consult the federation of European leagues, something La Liga President Javier Tebas recently emphasized. For a long time, FIFA's unilateral and imposing actions have faced fierce opposition from many sides, because they caused disruption to tournament schedules as well as seriously affected the health of players.
According to the European Leagues' argument, "FIFA's regulations and practices do not meet the requirements of EU law, are detrimental to the economic interests of national football leagues and the health and safety of players in the European football system". Therefore, according to them, "a legal challenge before the European Commission is a necessary action to protect the European football industry, which plays a major role in global culture and entertainment".
Last October, the European Leagues, FIFPRO and La Liga also claimed FIFA was "in breach of European Union law", and then filed a complaint with the EU's antitrust regulator.
