Thousands of people have been killed in the two-year conflict, which officially ended in November 2022, the United Nations reported on September 18. Both sides have accused each other of violence.

“The signing of the agreement may significantly reduce fighting. However, it will not resolve the conflict in northern Ethiopia, especially in the Tigray region, nor will it bring about any comprehensive peace ,” said Mohamed Chande Othman, chairman of the Ethiopian Commission of Experts on Human Rights, in a statement.

Mr. Othman also stressed that the situation in Ethiopia remains extremely serious.

Conflict in the Tigray region broke out in November 2020 between the Ethiopian federal government army and forces loyal to the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) that controls the region.

The tensions have killed thousands of people and forced more than 2 million from their homes. The United Nations has warned that the new conflict could push hundreds of thousands of people into dire food shortages.
