Coffee prices soar due to supply shortage concerns

On February 12, domestic coffee prices increased to 131,000 VND/kg, a sharp increase of 2,000 VND compared to the previous day. Arabica coffee prices on the world market also increased to an unprecedented high due to lack of supply.

On February 12, Tuoi Tre Online recorded that the domestic coffee market, coffee prices in the Central Highlands provinces fluctuated at 130,000 - 131,000 VND/kg.

In Dak Nong , Dak Lak, Gia Lai provinces, coffee was purchased at 131,000 VND/kg, an increase of 2,000 VND/kg compared to yesterday; coffee price in Lam Dong alone was 130,000 VND/kg.

Following the upward trend of world coffee prices, domestic coffee prices continued to rise to a new record. Limited supply and unfavorable weather in major growing regions were factors driving the increase in coffee prices.

In the second week of February alone, many coffee exporting enterprises predicted that domestic coffee prices could reach over 132,000 - 135,000 VND/kg.

In addition, many farmers and businesses expect that coffee prices will reach 150,000 VND/kg by the end of the first quarter of this year, as coffee prices increase steadily every day.

In the world market, coffee prices also fluctuate a lot.

Specifically, the price of robusta coffee in London for March delivery decreased by 22 USD/ton to 5,649 USD/ton; for May delivery, it decreased by 27 USD/ton. Arabica coffee in New York also increased to an unprecedented high, with delivery in March-May decreasing slightly.

Many businesses say the world market is currently in "panic" because the available supply of coffee is limited.

"Farmers in major coffee growing countries around the world are not willing to sell more to the market because they are waiting for the price. Vietnamese farmers are the same. I have a few partners with very small orders of coffee but are struggling to find sellers.

Therefore, coffee prices increase every day in a panic following the market shortage," said a coffee exporter with an office in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

By August 2026, coffee supply will be abundant again!?

Recently, Reuters news agency quoted the founder of the Biggby Coffee franchise chain with 350 stores in many US states: "The panic has finally been revealed. Coffee prices will continue to rise."

This news agency cited two solutions to end the situation of increasing coffee prices.

First, Brazil and Vietnam have a high coffee crop year, forecast to August 2026.

Second, demand in coffee consuming countries must fall sufficiently because of high prices.

It is known that in 2025, coffee prices will increase by about 35%, while last year, coffee prices increased by 70%.
