Immediately after his re-election on November 5, Mr. Trump quickly selected personnel for his upcoming administration. Many of the personnel were selected from television stations, of which at least four are employees or former employees of Fox News. These include Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, border official Thomas Homan, and National Security Adviser Michael Waltz. Other personnel selected by Mr. Trump are also familiar guests of Fox News, including Attorney General nominee Matt Gaetz. Mr. Gaetz has appeared on Fox News programs more than 300 times since 2017, although his recent appearances have been less frequent. The role of host and commentator on Fox News programs allows them to demonstrate their media skills to influential audiences, including Mr. Trump. “A lot of the people he picked have media experience, media exposure. That’s obviously very important to him,” said John Bolton, who served as national security adviser during Trump’s first term after more than a decade as a Fox News contributor. The rise of cable news executives to key roles highlights the growing influence of the media in Trump’s second administration. Although network television faces stiff competition from start-up media companies popular with younger audiences, cable appears to remain king for President-elect Trump. His recent series of personnel picks offers an early indication that television coverage could once again become a powerful factor in shaping the actions and approach of Trump 2.0. No network has more influence than Fox News for Trump. The conservative cable giant with which Mr. Trump once clashed remains the headquarters of many of his top media allies. Mr. Trump regularly watched and posted Fox News during his first term, giving the network particular influence in the White House. According to former adviser Bolton, Mr. Trump constantly watches Fox News in the dining room near the Oval Office. “Donald Trump is using Fox News as a staffing agency,” said Matthew Gertz, a senior fellow at Media Matters who has written about the relationship between conservative media and Mr. Trump. In addition to the media, loyalty is also a key factor in Mr. Trump’s personnel choices for his administration.
