In an interview with Fox Business, billionaire Elon Musk said the computers used in the attack appeared to have IP addresses from the Ukraine region.
Billionaire Elon Musk's social network X just experienced a major cyber attack on March 10, making users in Asia, Europe and North America unable to access the platform.
According to the monitoring site Downdetector, at its peak, more than 40,000 people reported the problem. Mr. Musk said that this was a large-scale attack, possibly carried out by a nation or an organized group.
In an interview with Fox Business, he said the computers used in the attack appeared to have IP addresses from the Ukraine region.
Cybersecurity expert Chad Cragle from defense platform Deepwatch said the prolonged outage was a sign of a targeted attack.
“This is all-out cyber warfare,” he said. “With Mr. Musk in the spotlight and political tensions running high, these attacks have the hallmarks of state-sponsored action.”
The incident raises questions about whether controversial billionaire Musk is being targeted, or whether Twitter's previous decision to drastically cut staff is having consequences for the social network.
Since Mr. Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion in late 2022, most of its employees have quit or been fired, raising concerns about the platform's ability to maintain safety and stability.
This is not the first time Mr Musk has blamed cyberattacks. Last year, he blamed hackers when his website crashed just before a live interview with Donald Trump, although he did not provide evidence.
