Plane flips over while landing at Toronto airport, 15 injured

(CLO) A Delta Air Lines plane flipped over while landing at Canada's Toronto Pearson Airport on Monday in high winds and heavy snow, injuring 15 of the 80 people on board.

Delta said a CRJ900 operated by its Endeavor Air subsidiary was involved in a single-plane crash with 76 passengers and four crew on board. The CRJ900, made by Canada's Bombardier, can seat up to 90 people.

A social media user posted a video of the aftermath, showing fire engines spraying water on the plane lying upside down on the snow-covered runway.

"We're in Toronto. We just landed. Our plane crashed. It flipped over... Everybody, most of the people seem okay. We're all getting off. There's smoke coming out," Facebook user John Nelson recounted in the video.

Pearson Airport said early Monday it was dealing with strong winds and cold temperatures as airlines tried to make up for missed flights after a weekend snowstorm dumped more than 22 centimeters of snow on the airport.

Of the 15 injured, two people were taken by helicopter to a trauma centre with serious injuries and one child was taken to a children's hospital, according to Peel Regional Paramedic Service Supervisor Lawrence Saindon. The remaining 12 people were taken to hospital. "We have had no fatalities," Saindon said.

Toronto airport was closed for 90 minutes before departing and arriving flights resumed. Canada's Transportation Safety Board (TSB) said it was deploying a team of investigators, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said a team of investigators would assist Canada's TSB.

The crash in Canada follows other recent crashes in North America. An Army helicopter collided with a passenger plane in Washington, killing 67 people, while at least seven people died when a medical transport plane crashed in Philadelphia.
