Reuters reported on January 24 that a Russian Il-76 military transport plane crashed near the Ukrainian border, while the Russian Defense Ministry said the plane was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war to prepare for an exchange.

RIA news agency quoted information from the Russian Defense Ministry as saying that the plane was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, in addition to 6 crew members and 3 others. The cause of the plane crash is unknown.

Images posted on Telegram by the Baza channel, which is affiliated with Russian security services, show a large plane falling and exploding into a large fireball.

The Il-76 is a military transport aircraft designed to transport troops, cargo, military equipment and weapons. It typically has a crew of five and can carry up to 90 passengers.

Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov of the Belgorod region (Russia) said that an unknown "incident" occurred in the Korochansky district northeast of the city of Belgorod and he was going to the scene to investigate.

He said investigators and emergency personnel were on the scene.

Responding to reporters' questions, a Kremlin spokesman said they were looking into the situation. Russia's Belgorod region borders Ukraine and has been under fire from Ukraine for several months.

Earlier on January 24, Ukrainska Pravda quoted sources from the Ukrainian Armed Forces as saying that a Russian Il-76 plane crashed in the Belgorod region.

According to sources, the plane crashed due to actions by the Ukrainian military. Sources said the plane was carrying S-300 missiles.
