(CLO) A plane carrying 21 passengers and crew crashed in Unity state, South Sudan on Wednesday, killing 18 people and seriously injuring three, according to the United Nations' Radio Miraya.

The plane took off from an oil field in the north of the country before it crashed. No further details were immediately available and Communications Minister Michael Makuei has not yet made an official response.

South Sudan, a country affected by a protracted civil war, has seen several serious plane crashes in recent years.

In September 2018, a small passenger plane flying from the capital Juba to the city of Yirol crashed, killing at least 19 people. In 2015, a Russian-made cargo plane carrying passengers crashed shortly after takeoff from Juba airport, killing dozens.

The causes of the accidents often stem from poor aviation infrastructure, lack of maintenance and severe weather conditions. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has repeatedly warned about the alarming flight safety situation in this country.
