Computers using artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to dominate the market after 2026.

AI-powered PCs are expected to drive a strong recovery in the global market, which has been struggling with declining demand, a new study by Hong Kong-based research firm Counterpoint Research shows.

AI -enabled PCs are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate from 2020, eventually dominating the market after 2026, with a share of more than 50%.

Intel, Qualcomm and other PC CPU makers are “working closely” with OEMs to develop next-generation mainstream PCs and expect to launch a slew of products after the fourth quarter of 2023, “marking a new chapter for the PC industry.”

Counterpoint Research admits that AI- powered PCs may not gain much traction in the early stages. But “with the increasing adoption worldwide , AI-powered PCs could grow significantly in the second half of 2024.”

AI on PCs adds more power to computers, including making computational tasks like deep learning training more efficient. Intel has been committed to advancing its AI-powered PC strategy. “Customers can enjoy exciting new AI capabilities – like real-time language translation, automated inference, and enhanced gaming environments,” said an Intel representative.

The global PC market continues to face a number of challenges, with manufacturers struggling to cope with high interest rates, rising inflation and supply chain disruptions – all of which are dampening consumer sentiment and demand.

Counterpoint Research reported that global PC shipments fell 9% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2023. This was an improvement from the 15% decline in the previous quarter, a sign that the PC market has bottomed out and is poised for recovery.

Lenovo, the world's largest PC maker, maintained its lead by shipping about 16 million units, down 5% from 2022, the report said.

Shipments from Dell and Asus fell 14% and 13%, respectively. Apple had the biggest drop, at 18%, with just 6.5 million units shipped compared to 7.9 million in 2022.
