According to CNBC, on January 15, Microsoft said small businesses can now subscribe to Copilot Pro in the company's productivity apps, and consumers who pay for Microsoft 365 software can also subscribe to the new paid version of Copilot.
Copilot Pro has a monthly fee of $20/user for individuals and small businesses.
Microsoft’s synthetic AI tool allows for natural text to be composed using short commands generated by a human. Expanding access to Copilot Pro could help the company begin to cover the costs of building out its AI-powered data center infrastructure. Investors have bet that Microsoft will capitalize on synthetic AI demand in operating systems, the cloud, productivity, web search and security, even as it faces competition from giants like Amazon and Google. That’s part of the reason Microsoft surpassed Apple as the world’s most valuable company last week.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said at Microsoft's Ignite conference in Seattle last November that AI is at the heart of the company's identity, saying "we are a Copilot company."
Microsoft began offering Copilot for Microsoft 365 to large companies in November 2023 for a monthly maintenance fee of $30 per user. Now, The Verge reports, small businesses paying for Microsoft 365 Business Premium and Business Standard can subscribe to up to 299 licenses for $20 per user per month.
Copilot Pro offers priority access to the latest models
Individuals who want to use Copilot can access it for free in a variety of ways, including in Bing search and at copilot.microsoft.com . To use Copilot in Word, Excel, Outlook, and other apps in Microsoft 365 Personal and Family, customers can sign up for the Copilot Pro add-on for $20 per person per month.
The advantage of Copilot Pro is “priority access to the latest models, starting with OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo today,” Microsoft says. “Whether you need advanced help with writing, coding, designing, researching, or learning, Copilot Pro delivers increased performance, productivity, and creativity.”
