A child died of Whitmore disease.

On June 2, the Dak Lak Department of Health received a report from the Dak Lak Center for Disease Control (CDC) about a child death due to Whitmore disease in the area.

The patient's name is VTYN (2 years old, residing in Cu Kbang commune, Ea Sup district, Dak Lak). According to the medical records, on May 21, N. showed symptoms of fever and diarrhea and had not been treated at home. On May 28, N.'s family took him to the Central Highlands General Hospital for examination and treatment.

Here, the child was diagnosed with grade 2 respiratory failure, severe pneumonia, monitored for sepsis, acute diarrhea without dehydration, meningitis not ruled out, and monitored for brain tumor.

On May 29, the child's condition worsened with a diagnosis of septic shock, sepsis, multiple organ damage, severe pneumonia, empyema (right), and mild blood clotting disorder.

At 5:20 p.m. on May 30, the child died with a diagnosis of septic shock, sepsis with multiple organ damage, severe pneumonia, empyema (right), acute diarrhea without dehydration; test results were positive for burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria.

According to CDC Dak Lak , this is the first case of patient death due to Whitmore in the province.

Whitmore is an infection in humans and animals caused by the bacterium burkholderia pseudomallei.

In Dak Lak, every year the health sector records an average of 5-7 cases of Whitmore disease.
