The White House on December 7 stated that the US will not get involved in the unrest in Syria, but will still take measures to prevent the rise of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).
Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum in California, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Washington would not choose sides in the conflict in Syria. However, the US said it would take necessary measures to prevent IS from emerging in northern Syria and that Washington would also support its allies in the region.
“The United States will not use military force to enter the conflict in Syria. What we are doing is focusing on the interests and priorities of the United States national security,” CNN quoted Mr. Sullivan as saying.

Mr. Sullivan's statement came after US President-elect Donald Trump posted on the social network Truth Social on December 7, saying that the US should not get involved in the situation in Syria.
“Syria is in chaos but it is not our friend. The United States should have nothing to do with Syria. This is not our war. Leave it alone and stay out of it,” Trump wrote, AFP reported.

Mr. Jake Sullivan also added that the Joe Biden administration agrees with Mr. Trump's analysis that recent events in Syria are the result of Russia's gradually depleting resources due to its focus on the war in Ukraine, while Moscow is an ally of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The White House security adviser stressed that officials are concerned about further developments, in the context that Syrian opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) are controlling a number of strategic cities and approaching the capital Damascus (Syria). The US lists HTS as a terrorist group.
In the latest developments related to the Syrian conflict, opposition groups claimed to have taken control of four cities within 24 hours, including Daraa, Quneitra, Suwayda and Homs. On December 8, the Syrian opposition said it had entered Damascus without any signs of Syrian armed forces deploying troops. However, this information could not be verified.
