Six individuals, including Hamas' current political leader Yahya Sinwar and former political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in an assassination attempt in Tehran in late July, were named in a court document dated February 1, accusing them of "conspiracy to provide material support for terrorist acts" along with six other charges. The document also includes a request for their arrest.

In a statement, US Attorney General Merrick Garland affirmed the same day that the above-announced charges were just part of Washington's efforts to target every aspect of Hamas' operations.

Washington currently lists the Hamas movement as a "terrorist organization".
